Your LittleOak guide to eco-friendly living

Your LittleOak guide to eco-friendly living

This Earth Month, please join us as we work to protect the world our little ones will inherit – after all, we want our children to grow up in a world that is safe, green, and filled with nature's wonders. Our team of parents have made a promise to live by a few philosophies this month and beyond, and we thought we might share them all with you. So, are you ready to go green?

Shop mindfully

It’s no secret that mass consumption takes a heavy toll on the environment. The production of SO MUCH stuff depletes and pollutes our ecosystems, and when we are mass-consuming, we create greater demand and therefore greater amounts of waste. While we all love a good shopping spree, it's important to shop mindfully. Consider buying vintage, or pre-loved items and, if you are buying new, consider buying from an ethical, sustainable brand.

Swap or donate

Little ones grow up quick. And right before our eyes, they’ll no longer fit the adorable little outfits we bought them not too long ago. When textiles are discarded, they’re often sent to landfills so consider swapping items with friends and family or drop them off at your local donation center.

Shop products made with sustainable materials

Keep an eye out for eco-labels and certifications attesting to a brand’s environmental commitment. Our Palm Oil Free certification, for instance, is an internally recognized certification that helps us demonstrate our commitment to both nourishing little ones with natural nutrition while simultaneously protecting our environment.

Reduce food waste and start a compost

We love this one. Starting a compost is a great activity to do with little ones and can also be part of the way you educate your children about caring for Mother Earth. Instead of throwing food waste in the bin, you can turn it into a rich soil to be used in your garden. By composting organic waste, we can increase soil fertility and the delivery of nutrients to plants while also reducing reliance on chemical fertilisers. Even better, composting also helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions – its a win-win!

Make your own cleaning supplies

From minimising packaging waste and reducing the amount of chemicals released into the environment, making your own cleaning supplies can help make your household more green. Consider ditching commercial household cleaners, instead opting for natural homemade supplies – and get this, it also saves money. If you check out our This Little Life episode with Pediatric Nurse, Nicky Skinner, she touches on this too.

Eat less meat

Eating less meat can help preserve water and land resources and also reduce climate change. In fact, according to Greenpeace UK, the climate impact of meat is roughly equivalent to ‘all the driving and flying of every car, truck and plane in the world.’ While different diets work for different people, reducing your meat intake can make a real impact on the health of our planet. Of course, you should always do what’s best for your family and for your health, but if this is an idea that interests you, incorporating a vegetarian meal once a week can be a great eco-friendly option.

While the true solutions for the climate crisis lie with governments, policy makers, and corporations, it's important to remember that we, as consumers, hold power in our choices. While we don’t have control over the driving forces of climate change, we can commit to small changes that demonstrate our commitment to Mother Earth. There’s strength in numbers, and our team at LittleOak will always always do our part to protect the planet for our future generation.

Let us know if you’re implementing any of these changes – we're certainly giving it a go, so we’d love to hear how you’re tracking. With love, always.
